How to Check If Your Website Is Cited in AI Answers: 6 Ways (2026)
By Anu Verma
No single report shows every AI citation, so combine sources: Search Console's Generative AI performance report (impressions in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no queries or clicks), Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report (citations in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries), GA4 referrals such as utm_source=chatgpt.com, server logs of ChatGPT-User and Perplexity-User visits, and asking the engines yourself. For daily coverage, Cituna records which pages seven AI engines cite, from $49 a month.

Being cited in an AI answer means the engine linked or named one of your pages as a source. You cannot see that in one place: Google, Microsoft, your analytics, your server and the engines themselves each show a different slice. This guide covers six ways to check, with exact steps for each and what each can and cannot tell you, citing each platform's own help pages.
The short answer: start with the two free first-party reports, Search Console's Generative AI performance report for Google and Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report for Copilot. Add GA4 referrals and your server logs, then ask the engines your buyers' questions yourself. If you need every engine checked every day, a tracker such as Cituna does that for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode.
Which method shows what?
| Method | Engines covered | What it shows | What it cannot show | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Search Console Generative AI performance report | Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Impressions of links to your site, by page, country, date, device | Queries, clicks, CTR, position, Search Labs data | Free |
| Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance | Copilot, AI summaries in Bing, select partners | Citations, cited pages, a sample of grounding queries | Clicks or traffic (not described) | Free |
| GA4 referrals | Any engine whose visits carry a referrer or UTM tag | Visits that clicked through | Citations nobody clicked | Free |
| Server logs | ChatGPT-User, Perplexity-User, Claude-User fetches | Pages read while a person asked a question | Whether the page was cited | Free if you can get logs |
| Asking the engines | Any engine you can open | The full answer and its sources for one run | Trends over time | Free |
| A tracker (Cituna) | Seven engines daily | Which pages each engine cited, over time | Microsoft Copilot | From $49 a month |
Each row is explained below, with the platform documentation it relies on. If you want the Google side in more depth, see what Search Console can show about AI Overviews and AI Mode.
How do I see AI Overview and AI Mode citations in Search Console?
Google's Generative AI performance report counts impressions, which its help page defines as how many times links to your site were shown to a user in a generative AI feature on Google Search. It covers AI Overviews and AI Mode; Discover has its own report. Google says the report reached all websites worldwide as of 31 August 2026 (Generative AI performance report, read 24 October 2026).
- Open Search Console and choose your property.
- Open the Generative AI performance report. Google's help page has an "Open the Generative AI performance report" link that takes you straight there.
- Read the impressions total for your date range. Treat the newest days, drawn as a dotted line, as preliminary: Google says they may change within hours.
- Switch the table between Pages, Countries, Dates and Devices. The Pages view is the useful one: it lists which of your URLs were shown in AI answers.
- Use the search type filter to separate Web: text-based from Web: multimodal.
- For clicks, open the ordinary Performance report. Google's AI features page says traffic from these features is reported there under the Web search type (AI Features and Your Website, updated 10 December 2025), and its metrics page says clicking an external link in an AI Overview or in AI Mode counts as a click (What are impressions, position, and clicks?, read 24 October 2026). Neither page names a filter that isolates AI clicks.
- Open Settings, then Search generative AI, and confirm your property is set to include your content. Google says a site excluded there receives no impressions or traffic from AI Overviews, AI Mode or generative AI features in Discover (Search generative AI control, read 24 October 2026).
What it cannot show: the help page lists no query dimension, so you cannot see which searches showed your link, and it does not mention clicks, click-through rate or position. Data from Search Labs experiments is not included. An impression also means a link to your site was shown, not that your brand was named in the text. For a click-loss method built on this data, see how to track Google AI Overviews.
How do I see Copilot citations in Bing Webmaster Tools?
Bing's AI Performance report, launched in public preview on 10 February 2026, shows how often your pages are cited in answers from Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing and select partner integrations (Bing Webmaster Blog, read 24 October 2026).
- Sign in to Bing Webmaster Tools with your site verified.
- Open the AI Performance dashboard.
- Read Total Citations for the period you choose, and Average Cited Pages, the average number of unique pages from your site cited per day.
- Look at page-level citation counts to see which URLs are cited most, and the trend line to see whether that is growing.
- Open the grounding queries, the key phrases the AI used when retrieving your content. Bing says this data is a sample.
- Try the preview features Bing added on 16 June 2026: Intents groups grounding queries into categories such as informational and commercial, Topics clusters related queries, Citation Share shows the percentage of citations for a grounding query that go to your site, and Compare overlays an earlier period (Bing Search Blog, read 24 October 2026).
What it cannot show: Bing's posts describe citations and references, not clicks or traffic, and grounding queries are a sample rather than every question asked. It covers Copilot, Bing and the partner integrations Bing selects, so it is no substitute for checking Google or the other engines.
How do I find AI referrals in GA4?
A citation that someone clicks becomes a visit, and GA4 can attribute it when the visit carries a referrer or a UTM tag. OpenAI's publisher FAQ says publishers who allow OAI-SearchBot can track referral traffic from ChatGPT in analytics platforms such as Google Analytics, and that ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs (OpenAI publishers and developers FAQ, read 24 October 2026).
- In GA4, select Reports, then on the left select Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition (GA4 Traffic acquisition report, read 24 October 2026).
- The table opens on Session default channel grouping. Change the dimension to Session source / medium.
- Type
chatgpt.comin the search bar above the table to see ChatGPT visits. - Repeat for
perplexity, gemini, copilotandclaude. These appear only when the visit arrives with a referrer or a tag that names the engine; a visit with neither cannot be credited to it. - To narrow the table to these visits, click + Add filter at the top of the report and, in the Build filter dialog, include the engine domains you found as Session source values.
What it cannot show: anything but clicks. An answer can be read without a click, so GA4 counts only part of your citations. It also cannot tell you which question led to the visit.
How do I find AI fetches in my server logs?
When someone asks an AI assistant a question that needs a fresh look at the web, the assistant may fetch your page under its own user agent. Three are documented by their makers:
| User agent | What its maker says it does | robots.txt | IP list |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT-User | Visits a page for user-initiated actions in ChatGPT and custom GPTs, such as when a user asks a question | OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply, because a user started the action | openai.com/chatgpt-user.json |
| Perplexity-User | Supports user actions within Perplexity; not used for crawling or training | Perplexity says it generally ignores robots.txt, since a user requested the fetch | perplexity.com/perplexity-user.json |
| Claude-User | Fetches pages when a Claude user asks a question | Anthropic says its bots honor robots.txt | Anthropic publishes a list of its crawler IPs |
Sources: OpenAI crawlers, Perplexity crawlers and Anthropic's crawler article, all read 24 October 2026. Their search crawlers, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot, are the bots behind each engine's search results, rather than fetches for one question.
- Download your web server or CDN access logs for the last 30 days. Ask your host or CDN provider if you cannot find them.
- Filter the lines by user agent. On a Linux or Mac terminal, with logs in the common combined format, this counts fetches per page:
grep -E "ChatGPT-User|Perplexity-User|Claude-User" access.log | awk '{print $7}' | sort | uniq -c | sort -rn | head -20
- Check that the busiest visitors come from the published IP ranges, so you are not counting a scraper that copies the name.
- Compare the most-fetched pages with the pages that receive AI referrals in GA4. A page fetched often but rarely clicked is being read and possibly quoted without sending visits.
What it cannot show: a fetch proves your page was read for a live question, not that it was cited or what the answer said. Engines can also answer from their own index without fetching your page at all.
How do I check citations by asking the engines?
Asking is the only method that shows the actual answer and every source in it. Each engine shows its sources a little differently:
- ChatGPT: OpenAI says responses that use web search may include citations, and Sources, when available, lists cited sources and other relevant links. It also warns that citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect, so open each one (Searching the web with ChatGPT, read 24 October 2026).
- Perplexity: its help center says answers carry numbered citations that link to the original sources (How does Perplexity work?, read 24 October 2026).
- Claude: Anthropic says every response with web search includes citations. Our guide to checking whether Claude recommends your brand has the Claude-specific steps.
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: the links shown in the answer are the ones Search Console counts as impressions.
- Write 10 to 15 questions your buyers ask, in their words.
- Ask each one in a private window, signed out where the engine allows it, so your history does not steer the answer.
- Record the date, engine, question, whether your brand was named and every cited URL, marking the ones on your domain.
- Repeat on at least three days, because the cited sources change between runs.

When should you use a tracker instead?
The manual method breaks down once you want the same questions on several engines every day. Fifteen questions on seven engines is 105 answers a day to read. A tracker asks for you, keeps every answer and its cited pages, and shows the trend.
Cituna asks your buyer questions every day on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode and records which pages each engine cited. Its AI crawler analytics, on every plan, show which AI crawlers read each page next to the answers that cite it, which joins the server-log view to the citation view without a terminal. Paid plans include Google Search Console. Starter is $49 a month for 1 brand and 10 prompts, and the 3-day trial needs a card. Cituna does not track Microsoft Copilot, so keep Bing's free report for that. See Cituna's plans at cituna.com or Cituna in our directory.
Other trackers that state citation or source reporting on their own pages:
| Tool | Citation reporting it states | Cheapest plan | Date read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Otterly.AI | Website citations and link citation analysis | $29 Lite, 15 prompts on 4 engines | 24 Sep 2026 |
| Peec AI | Source analytics: the domains and URLs AI engines cite | $95 Starter, 50 prompts on 3 models | 17 Oct 2026 |
| SE Visible | Cited domains and pages, by type | $99 Basic, 200 prompts | 29 Sep 2026 |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | Mentions and citations metrics | $50 for 2,500 Custom Prompts checks | 24 Sep 2026 |
Facts are from each vendor's pricing and product pages as recorded on this site on the dates shown (Otterly.AI, Peec AI, SE Visible, Ahrefs).
What to do first
- Open Search Console's Generative AI performance report, switch to Pages, and note which URLs Google shows in AI answers.
- Open Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance dashboard and note your most-cited pages.
- In GA4, search Traffic acquisition for chatgpt.com and the other engines, and note which pages they land on.
- Ask the engines five of your most important buyer questions and log every cited URL.
- If you need that last step done daily across engines, set up a tracker. Once you know where you stand, how to get cited by ChatGPT covers what to change, and automating SEO reporting with Search Console and AI visibility covers putting it in one weekly report.

Frequently asked questions
Does Google Search Console show if my site is cited in AI Overviews or AI Mode?
Partly. The Generative AI performance report counts impressions, meaning how many times links to your site were shown in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, date and device. Google's help page lists no query dimension and no clicks, and Search Labs data is excluded (read 24 October 2026).
Can I see ChatGPT citations in Google Analytics?
Only the ones people click. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links for sites that allow OAI-SearchBot, so those visits show as chatgpt.com in GA4's Traffic acquisition report. A citation nobody clicks never reaches your analytics.
What does Bing's AI Performance report show?
Bing says it shows how often your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and select partner integrations: total citations, average cited pages per day, page-level counts, trends and a sample of grounding queries. Intents, Topics, Citation Share and Compare were added in preview on 16 June 2026.
Does a ChatGPT-User visit in my server logs mean I was cited?
No. OpenAI says ChatGPT-User visits a page when a user asks ChatGPT something, so the visit shows your page was read for a live question. Whether it was cited, and in what answer, is not in the log.
How can I see which pages each AI engine cites every day?
Use a tracker. Cituna asks your buyer questions daily on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode and records which pages each engine cited, with AI crawler analytics beside it, from $49 a month. It does not track Microsoft Copilot, so pair it with Bing's free report.
Do OpenAI or Perplexity offer a citation report like Search Console?
Not on the pages we read on 24 October 2026. OpenAI's publisher FAQ points publishers to referral tracking in analytics tools such as Google Analytics, and Perplexity's bot documentation describes its crawlers but no site-owner report.
