How to Protect ChatGPT Chats on a Shared Computer

A lock for one ChatGPT chat is not available
ChatGPT does not provide a built-in way to lock one chat or require a separate password to open a particular conversation. Access to saved conversations depends on access to your ChatGPT account. If someone can use a browser where you are signed in, hiding a chat in the interface is not the same as keeping it from them.
Before handing over a computer, decide what you actually need to protect. If you only want a less cluttered sidebar while you continue using your own account, archiving may be enough. If another person will use the computer, the important boundary is your signed-in session, not the position of a chat in the sidebar.
A password on the computer can help when each person has a separate computer account and you lock or sign out of yours before they take over. It does not protect a ChatGPT chat from someone you let use the same unlocked account. For a shared workplace computer, use your own computer login where possible and sign out of ChatGPT before leaving it for the next person.
Archiving hides a conversation but does not secure it
Archiving a ChatGPT conversation removes it from the main chat list, but the conversation remains in your account. Open the chat you want to hide, use its conversation menu, and choose the archive option. Check the sidebar afterward to confirm that the chat has moved out of the usual list. Menu names and placement can change, so use OpenAI's help information if you cannot find the control.
An archived chat is still available to someone who can use your signed-in account. Archived conversations can be managed in ChatGPT settings, and an archived conversation may also appear when someone searches their chat history. Archiving is therefore a way to tidy or hide a ChatGPT conversation on a shared computer at a glance, not a privacy barrier against the next user.
If your aim is simply to keep an old work thread out of your own way, archive it. If your aim is to stop a colleague from reading it, sign out before they use the browser. Check whether other browser profiles or the desktop app are also signed in, since closing one tab does not necessarily end those sessions.
Deleting a chat is different from password protecting it
Deleting a ChatGPT conversation removes it from your chat history; it does not create a password-protected copy. Use deletion when you no longer need the thread, not as a substitute for signing out before sharing a computer. Open the conversation menu, choose delete, and read the confirmation carefully because a deleted chat cannot be restored through the normal chat history controls.
Deletion also has limits as an immediate privacy fix. OpenAI describes a process for removing deleted chats from its systems, subject to applicable exceptions. Removing a conversation from the account does not erase a screenshot, a downloaded file, text copied into another document, or anything someone already saw on an unlocked screen. If a chat contains material you need for work, save an approved version in the right workplace location before deleting it.
For future conversations, reduce what you put into the tool in the first place. The guide to removing sensitive details before sharing with ChatGPT helps with that earlier decision. If information has already been exposed to the wrong person, follow your workplace reporting process rather than assuming that deleting the chat resolves the exposure.
Signing out is safer when another person takes over
Sign out of ChatGPT before handing an unlocked computer to someone who should not see your conversations. In ChatGPT, open your account menu and choose the sign-out option. Then return to the ChatGPT page and check that it asks you to sign in rather than showing your chats. Do this in each browser profile or app you used on that computer.
Closing a tab, minimizing a window, or leaving the browser on another page does not reliably end a signed-in session. Locking your computer is useful while you step away and keep control of the device, but it is not the handover step if the next person will use your computer login. If you forgot to sign out on a computer you no longer control, check the security controls in your ChatGPT account for an option to end other active sessions, then review your account access.
Signing out protects access through your account on that computer. It does not remove files you downloaded, text saved in browser history or another app, or information shared through a connected service. If the other person needs to do a task for you, give them access through the appropriate work system rather than your credentials. The same principle applies when giving a teammate Gmail access without sharing your password.
The right choice depends on who will use the computer
Choose archiving for your own tidiness, signing out for a handover, and deletion only when you no longer need the conversation. These actions solve different problems. None adds a password to one ChatGPT chat, so start by identifying who will have access to the computer and which account they will use.
If you are showing a colleague a single answer while you remain at the keyboard, you can open that answer without giving them control of your signed-in account. Check the visible sidebar and any open tabs first. If they will work independently on the computer, sign out of ChatGPT and any other work services they should not access, then let them use their own accounts. If you are leaving the device unattended, lock your computer account as well.
Before any handover, look beyond the ChatGPT window. A copied answer may still be in a document, and an exported file may be in downloads or a shared folder. Sensitive source material deserves attention before it reaches an AI tool, too. For work that continues while you are away, prepare a handover from your inbox and calendar instead of leaving your accounts open for someone else.

Frequently asked questions
Can I password protect a ChatGPT conversation?
ChatGPT does not offer a separate password for an individual conversation. Your account sign-in controls access to saved chats. If another person will use your computer, sign out of ChatGPT before the handover and check that the chat history is no longer visible without signing in.
Will archiving keep a ChatGPT chat private on a shared computer?
No. Archiving moves the chat out of the main list, but someone using your signed-in account can still find archived conversations. It is useful for tidying your own history, not for protecting it from another person. Sign out if the next computer user should not see your chats.
Is locking my computer enough before a colleague uses it?
Locking the computer helps while nobody else has access to your computer account. If you unlock it and let a colleague use that same account, they may also reach your signed-in ChatGPT session. Sign out of ChatGPT first, and have the colleague use their own account where possible.
