Google says Meet can now detect spoken languages and translate speech into each listener’s chosen language, even when speakers switch languages. The update covers 63 languages and lets participants control translation for themselves.

What changed in Google Meet

Google says Meet speech translation now works across any combination of its 63 supported languages in a meeting. Previously, the organizer had to set one language pair for the whole call. Meet now detects what language someone is speaking and translates it into each listener’s preferred language, including when speakers use different languages or change languages mid-call.

Participants can turn translation on for themselves through a control in the meeting toolbar. They can also specify languages they understand so Meet leaves those untranslated. When translation is active, Google says captions match the translated audio. The update covers Meet on the web and on Android and iOS. People using Google Meet hardware in a conference room can hear translated speech from remote participants, but speech from the room’s hardware is not translated for others.

Who can use Google Meet speech translation?

Google says everyone in an eligible meeting can use speech translation, including guests from outside the organizer’s organization. The organizer needs an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan. In a direct call between two people, either person can provide the eligible plan. Google lists Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Frontline Plus, Google AI Pro and Ultra, Google AI Pro for Education, AI Expanded Access and AI Ultra Access. The announcement does not give prices.

Translation lasts up to 90 minutes per meeting on eligible base Workspace and Google AI Pro plans, or up to 8 hours on AI Expanded Access, AI Ultra Access and Google AI Ultra. Google says rollout starts October 22, 2026, for Rapid Release domains and November 2 for Scheduled Release domains. Access may not appear immediately, and mobile users need an updated Meet app.

How do I try speech translation at work?

A multilingual team meeting is a sensible first use for Google Meet speech translation, particularly one where participants normally switch languages. Each person who wants translated audio can enable it during the call using the translation control in the meeting toolbar. Translation starts off for individual participants at the beginning of a meeting, even where an administrator has made the feature available.

Check whether the translated audio conveys the intended meaning, whether captions agree with what you hear, and whether languages you already understand stay untranslated if you have selected them. Before relying on translation for a long meeting, check the plan’s time limit. Google says translation does not work in live streams, recordings, client-side encrypted meetings, dial-in or third-party interoperability calls, or with adaptive audio. Regional and age restrictions also apply. Users control whether their own speech is translated for others.

Frequently asked questions

Does everyone in a Google Meet call need an eligible plan?

No. Google says an eligible organizer makes speech translation available to meeting participants, including guests from other organizations. In a direct call between two people, either participant can have the eligible plan. Each participant chooses whether to turn on translation during the call.

Will Google Meet translate speech from a conference room device?

Not for other participants. Google says people using Google Meet hardware in a conference room can listen to translated speech from remote speakers. Speech picked up through the room’s Meet hardware will not be translated for people elsewhere in the meeting.
